The ex-Ireland captain shared pictures of Jet playing with his kids and other dog as a tribute.

He wrote: “Thanks Jet for being so beautiful and loyal to our family. We will miss you.”

Fans were quick to pass on their condolences to Keane and his loved ones.

One wrote: “Rip. Can be hard losing a pet. Been there before. Never gets any easier, but at least you have amazing memories.”

Another commented: “It’s horrible and makes you realise how much a member of the family animals are. Condolences Roy.”

A third added: “Sorry for your loss Roy.. a bond that will forever be with you and your family!”

Yet another said: “Beautiful dog. So precious to have then as part of the family and so heartbreaking when they have to leave so soon.”

Keane’s love of dogs is well known and has previously demonstrated his support for the Irish Guide Dogs organisation.

He has worked with the charity for a number of years.

Keane’s dog ‘Triggs’ was one of the famous dogs in football right up until his passing in 2012.

One of the Man United icon’s memorable quotes was: “Unlike humans, dogs don’t talk s**t.”

Last November, Keane starred alongside Jet in an advertisement for Adidas.

In the video, Keane took Jet for a walk in the Lake District countryside – before driving a boat across the water.

He said: “I played to win from when I was eight or nine years of age.

“You were literally on the biggest roller coaster of your life.

“The highs are extreme and the lows… my goodness. But sometimes you have to lose to win.

“The biggest challenge for any sportsperson is actually when your career finishes.

“You almost know you’re never going to reach those highs again but you have to accept that.

“I’ll never get that buzz from anything else in my life.

“Being in the dressing room winning stuff with good team-mates and good players… oh, honestly, it really is amazing.

“Life’s been pretty good to me in terms of my career and my family.

“I actually have a lot of contentment in my life.

“That can go sometimes but generally speaking, yeah I am pretty contented.”
